How to get the perfect Distress?

Posted by Josée on

This lady was a bleeder! That means that the original stain was bleeding into the paint. Why? Many antique pieces aren't sealed with a varathane, but rather a oil or wax.

How to fix this? You could use a primer, but then when you distress (by sanding the edges), you would see some of the white primer. I rather opted for a clear shellac, 2 coats, prior to painting. Shellac will seal any stains or odors and dry clear. I painted this pretty dresser with Tranquility from Aspire Mineral Paint. I then sanded the edges to achieve a worn distress look, and then I sealed it with a clear wax.

As simple as that! :)
